立木畫廊(Lehmann Maupin):挑戰視覺感官的多元論述

1996年成立的立木畫廊(Lehmann Maupin)由樂睿昕(Rachel Lehmann)和慕德偉(David Maupin)聯手創辦於紐約,致力推廣風格多元、形式不拘,且具前瞻性的創作,並多次引介重要藝術家在紐約舉辦個展,如:崔西.艾敏(Tracey Emin)、李昢(Lee Bul)、徐道獲(Do Ho Suh)、劉韡(Liu Wei)等。

近年來,立木畫廊對於亞洲市場的重視有著積極的作為與成果,在2013 年於香港開設首間海外空間,接著在2017 年於首爾設點,連結亞洲各地的藝術場景,創造深具突破性和挑戰性的視覺表達形式,與藝術家交流。

立木畫廊在「台北當代藝博」展出三位韓國藝術家李昢、徐世鈺(Suh Se Ok)、徐道獲以及奧地利雕塑家歐文.沃姆(Erwin Wurm)的作品,呈現藝術家們如何將所使用的創作媒介推展至表現界限,並提供迥然不同的藝術觀點。

李昢善用太空、生物工程等命題進行創作,她所創作出的畸形或殘缺的形體暗示著對追求科技發展過於渴求的未來預示,異次元的情境充滿著對於人性的探索與省思意味;而徐世鈺則將傳統水墨注入革新意識的抽象構圖,「人們」(People)系列發展自1960 年代,以簡化的群聚人形象徵社會內部的變動與關聯。其子徐道獲則以建築、家用物件為主題,透過具穿透性的纖維材料建構起的量體,反映出對家庭和空間的幽微回憶;至於以「胖雕塑」(Fat Sculpture)、「1 分鐘雕塑」(One Minute Sculptures)聞名的沃姆以帶有惡趣味的表現方式,挑戰雕塑的創作觀念與形式邊界,藉以讓人進一步反思當前的審美與消費文化。

Lehmann Maupin: A Diverse Discourse that Challenges Visual Senses

Lehmann Maupin was founded by Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin in New York City in 1996. The gallery is dedicated to promoting works that are pioneering, diverse in style and form, introducing prominent artists through solo exhibitions in New York, such as Tracy Emin, Lee Bul, Do Ho Suh, Liu Wei, and others. Lehmann Maupin has had great success in the Asian market in the past years – they opened their first overseas branch in Hong Kong in 2013 and opened another space in Seoul in 2017 to connect the art scene across cities in Asia in an effort to explore ground-breaking and pioneering visual expressions and connect with artists.
Lehmann Maupin presents works by three Korean artists Lee Bul, Suh Se Ok, Do Ho Suh, and Austrian sculptor Erwin Wurm at Taipei Dangdai, giving the audience a glimpse into how artists utilize creative media to the best of their potential with thoroughly distinct artistic perspectives.
Lee Bul is adept at using propositions of outer space, bioengineering in her works; she creates deformed or maimed forms to imply human's overzealousness in pursuing technological progress and predictions about the future – this portrayal of another dimension encourages self-reflection and an exploration into humanity. Suh Se Ok incorporates traditional ink into an innovative abstract composition. The People series first began in the 1960s, it uses the simplistic human imagery to signify the changes and associations within society. His son Do Ho Suh is concerned with the themes of architecture and household objects, erecting translucent structures using polyester fabric to conjure up faint memories of family and space. Renowned for his Fat Sculpture and One Minute Sculptures, Wurm possesses a wicked sense of humor and expression. Through challenging sculptural concepts and the parameters of form, he encourages people to further reflect upon our current cultures of aesthetics and consumerism.
