Galerie Perrotin: Pioneering Contemporary Gallery Spanning across the East and West
By Chen Yi-Hua
Founded in Paris, Galerie Perrotin cultivates artists with potential and has extended its reach to multiple major Asian cities in addition to its New York space, such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Shanghai, making it one of the few European galleries actively expanding its market in Asia.
The gallery founder Emmanuel Perrotin was also on the 2018 ArtReview Power 100 list at 54th place. Uli Huang, the Director of Hong Kong and Shanghai spaces, said that Galerie Perrotin has opened spaces in Asia as a means to provide a platform connecting China and the West, they have also found that with Hong Kong's unique position as Asia's trading hub and its strategic geographical position, it can elevate the visibility of their artists in Asia, for instance, Chen Fei, a Chinese artist represented by the gallery, was able to participate if FIAC for this reason.
Galerie Perrotin aims to present a group exhibition of American artist Daniel Arsham, exhibited in Tokyo and Seoul, and Japanese artists in the first annual Taipei Dangdai. Born in 1980, Arsham first received prominence when he built a fictional paleontology concept-structured with unprecedented aesthetics, using sands, sodium selenite, volcanic ash, and other geological materials to create fake artifacts out of contemporary figures and everyday objects that look to have been excavated after years buried, branding these artifacts as relics from the future. For him, these man-made objects of ruins are proofs that human is the creator of all things. In addition to installation work, the artist conveys different art forms through gouache painting, sculpture, and conceptual art. Surpassing the notions of time and space, Arsham has endowed sculpture, architecture, painting, film and others fields with eternity through cross-cultural symbols.
