Esther Schipper: The Pilot of Poetic Time-space
By Chu Yi-An
Founded in Cologne, Germany in 1989, Esther Schipper will celebrate its 30th anniversary in March of 2019. Since its relocation to Berlin, the gallery has been reputed as "a dynamic force in shaping Berlin's art scene" and dedicated to exploring the market in Asia for the past five years.
Esther Schipper specializes in time-based art projects and expands the market by hosting exhibitions. The artists whom the gallery has worked with since the 1990s include Angela Bulloch, a member of the YBAs and a Turner Prize nominee, 2002 Prix Marcel Duchamp winner Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster; Liam Gillick, who was also a Turner Prize nominee and represented Germany at La Biennale di Venezia in 2009, Pierre Huyghe, who received incredible recognition for his work After Alife Ahead that explores life in a spatial structure at Skulptur Projekte Münster, Tate Modern's commissioned artist Philippe Parreno who created an on-site project at the Turbine Hall and other artists. These artists re-envision exhibitions and artworks as a critical medium and realizing them in bold creative forms.
Philippe Parreno's representative work Marquee series will be spotlighted at Taipei Dangdai. This series first began in 2006 and has accumulated over 50 artworks. His work from 2016 will be on view. Marquee is a sculpture assembled with lightbulbs and fluorescent tubes; the artist programs the light to dance and glimmer interchangeably, allowing viewers to reconsider the idea of "light" in Western ideologies while connecting time, reason, God and other spiritual notions.
