Galleria Continua: Art History in Progress
By Isabelle Kuo
It was 1990 when three friends, Mario Cristiani, Lorenzo Fiaschi, and Maurizio Rigillo founded Galleria Continua in San Gimignano, an Italian town steeped in history, away from the big cities and the ultramodern urban centers. As stated by Mario Cristiani, the gallery's goal is to "create a reputation as a center capable of producing exciting and challenging contemporary work where it is least expected." Working away from the central art hubs is second nature for Galleria Continua, which has opened its Beijing space in 2004, much earlier than most foreign galleries in China. Galleria Continua Les Moulins, designated for large-scale and long-term creations, was established in the Parisian countryside in 2007, and La Habana Cuba, devoted to hosting groundbreaking cultural projects, was established in 2016.
To Cristiani, Galleria Continua has an identity "grounded in two values – generosity and altruism – which lie at the heart of all its dealings with artists, the general public, and its development as a whole." The gallery aspires to take part in the writing of history, placing value on contemporary creative practices as well as art's ability to connect individuals and locations with the past, present, and future.
At Taipei Dangdai, Galleria Continua presents artists Etel Adnan, Loris Cecchini, Carsten Höller, Anish Kapoor, Hans Op de Beeck, Giovanni Ozzola, Kiki Smith, and Pascale Marthine Tayou. Kapoor's Mirror (Black Mist) embodies the artist's longtime concern in the notion of fullness and emptiness. Höller, who had a solo exhibition investigating the hybridity of modern science and ancient technology at Galleria Continua Beijing in 2018, shows a piece exploring the connection between lines and space.
