Excerpts from 2020 Contemporary Sculpture of Japanese Masters, A Curator’s Reflections, Yun-Hsin Lai
Takeshi Hayashi currently works as the Head of the Department of Sculpture at Geidai. His stone sculptures present the original scenery in Japanese people’s hearts, such as water fields and small mountains. The display of his works must intervene in the space and integrate with the environment, and the viewers will enter or even step on his works to view them. His works also investigate the space of “4.5 tatami mats,” traditionally the size of a chasitsu (tea room), its influences in the daily lives of Japanese people, and the standards in their hearts.
