Ting Hsien WU
“Linear Space”, has actually always been a focal point of his creative exploration. While each of Wu’s paintings is an independent work, his creativity follows a progression in which the energy and momentum of preceding works produce the ones that follow.
A line has always been an important element of Wu’s art, one that runs through the creative advances in each period of his work. Most recently, his lines have taken on even greater freedom and flexibility. To his rugged, calligraphically-inspired black brushstrokes he now adds more finely drawn lines, creating a heightened contrast and sense of form in his layering. A line carries more weight here than ever before, as Wu’s bold calligraphic lines take flight like great birds and whirl with dragon-like ease in the air. In their midst, firm, straight lines with a more Western structural feel add the touches that complete the whole, making it an ingenious blending of elements borrowed from both East and West. Color, too, takes on extra importance, and Wu’s refined application of it provides an added intensity that truly completes his paintings.
Wu Ding-Hsian excels at the contrasts that create art: hardness and softness, and the contrasts of vivid color with simple black and white tones. The subtle variations of his white tones create scores of layers, making Wu’s minimalist style one that provides new rewards with every viewing. The exceptional taste and refinement of Wu Ding-Hsian’s work and its boundless imagination make it truly a feast for the soul.
