Each Modern is pleased to present “Dear Car, Who Are You?” by Taiwanese photography artist Juan Sea at ART SOLO. The exhibition will exhibit two series of work Dear Car(2018) and who are you?(2019) together to demonstrate how the artist photographs by phone through his unique seeing eyes with humor.
Juan’s Dear Car captured vehicles on the street of Taiwan. Different from the plain car headlights in The Cars by Wolfgang Tillmans, Juan’s close-up photos are more like the bust portrait of cars. Mottled hood, broken bumper, windshield with stickers, we seem to be able to imagine the image of the owner through the appearance of these vehicles, and then speculate how the vehicle is treated and used.
Created during his artist residency in Lishui, China, who are you is a series of photographs Juan shot with the negative image function of his phone. In order to see the original scenery, the audience must photograph the work with their phones in negative image mode again. Without any proper facilities, Juan’s who are you tends to be abstract painting or Chinese ink on paper landscape, playing with the principle of seeing.
