Sadie Coles HQ: A Force of Eclecticism
By Isabelle Kuo
A facilitator for many of the art world's leading superstars, Mrs. Sadie Coles had refrained from setting up new branches abroad but is now an excellent international art dealer. She said, "Sometimes I wish people would call the gallery so I could talk to them in person." Encouraged by her friends Oliver Peyton, Sarah Lucas, and John Currin, Coles founded Sadie Coles HQ in 1997. "There felt to be a dual sense of urgency and of excitement in the London art world as if anything was possible," she reminisced, "When considering programming or representation, I am looking for something that surprises – a manifestation of original thought, something that disrupts and rethinks." Coles identifies artists who have received academic recognition, and works with both high-profile, established artists as well as emerging artists.
Sadie Coles HQ now represents 50 artists and, on top of its commercial success, is committed to supporting young artists. Through its recent Condo artist exchange program, the gallery has pushed for international exchange between London, New York, and Shanghai.
At Taipei Dangdai, Sadie Coles HQ presents a group exhibition that features an eclectic selection of abstract and figurative paintings and sculptures by both established and emerging artists. Among the artists, Dusseldorf-born and Belgium-based Kati Heck, who joined the gallery in 2018, is known for her portraitures; and London-based German painter Daniel Sinsel is known for his abstract paintings exploring two-dimensional spatial illusion and body-object relations. "The opportunity to increase the exposure of younger artists amongst an international audience is an exciting – and intrinsic – part of our role as a gallery," said Coles. Works from established artists are also present at Taipei Dangdai, including a sculpture titled Jubilee by Sarah Lucas, who represented Britain at the 2015 Venice Biennale, and an enchanting portrait Roseborg, (Elias) by Elizabeth Peyton.
